Filtration of liquids and gasses Print E-mail

Effects of solids contamination

Filtration is the removal of solids from liquids or gasses by flowing the contaminated liquid through a filter media or with the help of centrifugal forces that will retain the solids and allow only clean product to pass. There are several reasons to remove solids from liquids and gasses:

  • Remove impurities such as pipe-scale and sand from process streams.
  • Create better aesthetic appearance of the product like solids in paint.
  • Process improvement like catalyst removal in refineries
  • Reduction of abrasive wear and blockage in hydraulic and lubricating systems.
  • Continuous solids removal to protect finished product like grinding and cutting oils
  • Removal of particles that could affect health.

The experience of designers and users of hydraulic and lube oil systems has verified the following fact; Over 75% of all system failures are a direct result of contamination.

Fuels, both liquid and gas, are usually travelling through the system once and are consumed at the end of the line. Since the process stream carries new contamination on a continues basis the amount of solids to be removed can be much higher than in any hydraulic system. The requirements for cleanliness of fuels are part of the fuel specifications and these specifications are met using nominal filtration. (Hydraulic and lubricating oils, which are circulated again and again through the same equipment, require absolute filtration for the best performance of the equipment).

Hydraulic Filtration Print E-mail

HCF series filterhousingMost hydraulic systems contain a limited amount of hydraulic oil which is re-circulated with high velocity through the system under high temperature and pressure. Due to the closed-loop nature of these systems the amount of contamination is limited, but the requirements for cleanliness are high. Due to the intensive contact between the limited amount of oil and the system components contamination will lead to damage and component failure.

sour water filter sourwaterFiltration systems are essential to the success of your operation. Each time you incorporate new products into your process, you must be confident they will be compatible with your overall system, will perform consistently under stringent demands, will hold up to constant use and, most importantly, will do the job right...the first time and every time. Whether you have a small or large application, Hydro-Carbon Filtration & Separation B.V. can offer a variety of filtration systems. These systems, consisting of vessels and internals, are used extensively in the chemical processing, food processing,  paint, pharmaceutical, photo-processing and virtually any other industry. The product line includes also replacement cartridges to improve the efficiency and/or the economics for existing housings.

Products are used for filtration and separation of Caustic, Solvents, Peroxide, Amine, Sour Gas, Natural Gas and many other hydrocarbons.

Cyclone Liquid-Solids Separation Print E-mail

tangential inlet cyclone separator cycloneseparator solids from liquidsThe Hydro-Carbon Filtration & Separation B.V. liquid - solids cyclones from the series LSC are designed for the removal of relative course solids from low viscosity liquids.

Large passage liquid - solids cyclones offer a cost effective solution for the removal of large amounts of course solids from high volume liquid streams found in the process industry. Due to the large passages inside the cyclone (the solids drain connection is the smallest of the cyclone process connections) plugging is virtually impossible.

Unlike basket strainers and filters, cyclones are unaffected by sudden releases of large amounts of solids. The differential pressure depends on the actual flow rate going through the cyclone. Therefore the differential pressure will remain unchanged if the cyclone is confronted with a 'slug' of solids. The solids will be removed and the cyclone will continue to operate without maintenance requirements.
